  1. Construction Project Contingency

There's a distinction to be made here. There was the F2P client that anyone could download, which the mod enabled the use of for non-Russians. This is the one where MS sort of said that they'd rather Americans stay off Russian servers and that was that, they left ED alone pretty much after that.

'Project Contingency is an indie Halo game exclusively for PC created by Halo fans, for Halo fans. The game has been in production for over a year with a whole staff of artists, and programmers.' A contingency plan is essentially a “Plan B.” It’s a backup plan in place for when things go differently than expected. In other words, a contingency plan in project management is a defined, actionable plan that is to be enacted if an identified risk becomes a reality.

I mean, if it's done right, I'll be right there with you. I just have a lot of trouble trusting in it when Halo 4 was lackluster, MCC was practically broken and Halo 5 was underwhelming, coming from the same publisher that summarily ignored PC players wanting mainline-franchise Halo on the platform for double-digit years. If Microsoft suddenly gives enough of a shit to finally feed a hungry playerbase something that's worth consuming, I'll be the first one to send them a congrats card and a fruit basket where the pineapple looks like a Spartan helmet. 343 busts their ass, I just think MS gets in the way of a lot of good things from a lot of studios (them included), and the last thing I want to see is Halo suffer. It's still relevant, and the reception to ElDewrito proved that. Update: April 27, 2018Following some temporary Twitch and YouTube bans that were issued earlier this week, there's been some questions around whether or not streaming or posting Halo Online/ElDewrito content is allowed.Because ElDewrito is built upon Microsoft-owned Halo Online content that was never lawfully released or authorized for this purpose, streaming or building content from the mod could result in action taken against your account.

This is the side entrance to the ESL studio, and the balloons are from a kid’s birthday party a block away. But it’s a great illustration of how balanced these conversations are. It;’s tough for us to refute things like this. It looks defensive, for one thing, and often we’re tilting at windmills. That event was packed, energetic, fun and enjoyable. As someone else pointed out, those balloons are close to the overflow tent, which was required because we couldn’t fit everyone in the main studio. Ask someone who went.BTW, we’re not “shutting down the mod” or going after the Eldewrito crew - we’re enacting action to remove the Halo Online code and packages from places it’s being hosted.

The distinction may seem like semantics to a lot of folks, and I don’t blame them for assuming that, but to be clear, this is a legally necessary step to protect code, product, IP, trademarks and copyrights, and is not optional. I don't think you understand the actual argument being made, or you're misrepresenting it in order to avoid tackling it head-on. I don't think Steam has anything to do with it. I think it has far more to do with the fact that Halo fans on PC got intentionally ignored, especially in the wake of that Russian market beta. If you're an incredibly vocal userbase and the company looks at that and goes, 'nah, but thanks for your interest,' then it kind of speaks volumes about how much they gave a shit about them in the first place.I find it odd that MS essentially used a 'hacked / illegal' version of their own shit that other people toiled to bring to the starving masses to act as a barometer of something that they should have already been feeling against their own faces, but I guess that's just me. Anytime you hear any version of the word 'entitled,' it's a fast way to say 'I'm just looking to shut someone down without actually doing any argumentative work.'

Construction Project Contingency

I never said I was entitled, I never said fans were, either. I said that Microsoft saw a big outcry for Halo on PC and ignored it for over a decade, which is a very dumb move for any business that likes to make money.I don't think you understand the actual argument being made, or you're misrepresenting it in order to avoid tackling it head-on.

Why didn’t Sony make Uncharted for PC? Why isn’t Nintendo making Mario for PlayStation. Oh yes because of two decades of strategic planning to support one ecosystem. We now have two ecosystems, philosophically, which is why our future games are lined up for PC too.

If you think everyone was sitting around with vacant stares blissfully unaware that there was demand on PC for certain console products, then I have a trickle down insurance plan to sell you. Strategies change.

It’s not even remotely weird. You may not like it, you may be correct that “money is being left on a historical table,” but there are myriad actual logical reasons for it. You’d also need to know hypotheticals to know if it made sense or not. I don’t even know the dollar answer to that, and I see the budgets. Also using the word “starving” for a wholly optional entertainment experience does a disservice to PC players who want games that are made, scaled or tuned specificically for that platform. I’m not asking you to like it, or even accept it, but at least acknowledge there’s a method to the “madness.”And I’ve already explained why we are bound to protect our IP and code in this thread.I’m a video game player (I think an old-ass man saying “I’m a gamer” sounds weird so I edited it) and I’m excited about the potential of our PC game output. I’m probably more like you than you think.

Just wrinkling and balder. Like an Egyptian cat that only eats cake. Why didn’t Sony make Uncharted for PC? Why isn’t Nintendo making Mario for PlayStation. I’m probably more like you than you think. Just wrinkling and balder. Like an Egyptian cat that only eats cake. This post is kinda really useless? The franchise manager acknowledging that there’s criticisms to be made, but just want people to acknowledge there’s reasons behind why everything’s a mess, but why does that matter? We’re consumers, we see Halo as a franchise go from being one of the biggest to gaming, to something fading away from public consciousness.People have reasons to be upset. You can only ignore entire markets, make weird design decisions etc.

And of course you’re going to get people vocal and take actions like this.To be blunt, nobody really cares, at all, about the internal politics that are going around 343/MS. If anything, those complications and management decisions ARE a reason to make complaints, not really an excuse to give a game dev slack for actively giving a subpar output for years. It’s a buzzword around here for sure, but it’s highly disingenuous to act offended and say that PC gamers want optimized versions of games, and not stuff like ElDewrito. ElDewrito is a direct response to MS ignoring the PC market for about a decade, and also going back to the gameplay style of Halo 3. Much like the mod scene, it’s a part of the community, and what was being done was a product of banding together in genuine interest, not something of shameful indulgence. It’s also even more disingenuous to put Halo as a franchise analogous to Mario/Uncharted considering its rather strong PC roots. But hey, 343’s franchise manager genuinely not being able to properly understand the brand would make a lot of sense.

Firstly maybe you need to look at the facts on why they ignored it for a decade before getting entitled.Microsoft you know wanted people to buy consoles for Halo. Who’d have thought it? Halo at the time was a console selling game. Even the ones who played the original Halo on PC bought a 360 to play Halo 3.Do you know why MS never released Forza, Gears or Crackdown before this gen? It was because who would have thought it again the Xbox 360 was selling well. Why release on PC?

If people wanna play these games then they should get a 360 for it.They changed their strategy this gen after Spencer took over. One of the reasons was due to how poorly the Xbox one was selling compared to its predecessor.

So it made more sense to bring Forza, Gears and even Crackdown out on another platform. This isn’t a Bungie or 343 decision you know. It was a MS strategy. That's not something you should shrug off. 343 isn't being a good steward of the franchise, and a lot of it has to do with not understanding what that player base was attracted to in the first place.

You understand the vocal sycophants that tell you that everything is great, and I'm sure there are a lot of them, but Halo as a franchise has become bloated and very, well, un-Halo. I shouldn't need to read nine novels to fully contextualize a game's story. I shouldn't need to have a million movement maneuvers to run and gun and punch and grenade. There was an elegant simplicity that endeared entire generations, and ElDewrito capitalized on that. If you (collectively, as a studio) don't see that for what it is, then you're missing the point and will continue to see fans abandoning the franchise.I tell you this as someone who spent their college years in system link heaven. Please understand.
