Elysium's Secretary of Defense, Delacourt (played by Foster), is charged with the duty of stopping illegal immigration to Elysium at all costs. A lack of medicine on Earth begins driving humans to risk the journey to Elysium, a crime which often results in death.One of Elysium's prime benefits are its Med-Bays. These machines have the ability to cure virtually all disease, regenerate new body parts, and even stop (or reverse) people from aging. Max Da Costa (played by Damon), a parolee who suffered a lethal dose of radiation in an industrial accident, is given 5 days to live. As the desperation to survive begins to take hold, Max teams up with his old friend Julio and human trafficker named Spider in order to secure passage to Elysium and cure his radiation poisoning. In the process Max is reunited with his childhood sweetheart Frey, now a nurse, whose daughter Matilda suffers from leukemia. From a diverse set of people Max leads a ragtag team to save both himself and Matilda.In a desperate move to keep Elysium pristine and free of impoverished humans from Earth, Delacourt orders sleeper agents to fire at and destroy any shuttles attempting to leave Earth for Elysium.
One agent, Kruger (played by Sharlto Copley), is recruited to hunt down and kill Max and his crew. The ensuing hunt for Max and his team ends with the capture of Frey and young Matilda, held hostage in exchange for Max. In order to breach security Max is forced to kidnap and extract information from Elysium's design engineer John Carlyle (played by William Fichtner), and discovers a means to save not only himself and Matilda, but the entire human race as well. As Kruger becomes more and more reckless to meet his goals, Delacourt is put into the position of not only eliminating Max and his team, but Kruger as well. In a strange turn of events Kruger's ship crashes into Elysium, delivering Max and Matilda to the resources they need to survive. Max and Spider then begin their fight against Elysium's security forces for Matilda's survival.Released in August of 2013, Elysium runs 109 minutes and is distributed by Tri-Star Pictures.
